PhD Scholarship by German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

The African Centre for Migration & Society (ACMS) at the University of the Witwatersrand is seeking applications for MA and PhD scholarships offered by DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) as part of its ‘In-Region Scholarship Programme South Africa’.

Employing approaches from across the social sciences, humanities, and built environment the project will conduct original research and interventions in Johannesburg, Accra, and Nairobi. Through continental and translocal collaborations with colleagues in academia and the arts, it will make important conceptual, theoretical and methodological contributions to theories on multiple mobilities and urbanisation across sub-Saharan Africa.

 Full scholarships are available for Four MA and Five PhD students accepted for the Migration and Displacement programme at ACMS in 2021

Requirements for DAAD ACMS Wits University PhD Scholarship

PhD applicants must;

  1. Must be nationals or permanent residents of a Sub-Saharan African country (excluding South Africa);
  2. PhD applicants must have an MA degree with a total aggregate mark of at least 70%;
  3. Must have been accepted to study for MA/PhD in Migration and Displacement at ACMS (please see application information here).

Application Documents

  1. Research Concept: this should outline your research topic or question, relevant literature and proposed methods. This should be 5 – 10 pages
  2. 2 reference/recommendation letter

How to Apply

Interested and qualified? Go to German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) on www.wits.ac.za to apply

 Applications should include:

  1. A cover letter summarising qualifications, professional experience and reasons for interest in the Migration and Displacement programme;
  2. A complete CV;
  3. Copies of transcripts and degree certificates;
  4. SAQA evaluation (for foreign qualifications);
  5. A short research proposal (1500 words maximum) outlining the proposed research project;
  6. A writing sample of not more than 10,000 words (e.g., a chapter; article; term paper).

Female applicants and candidates from less privileged regions or groups are especially encouraged to apply.

Applicants are strongly recommended to identify a potential supervisor within ACMS and contact them before submitting their application.
