What is NYSC?
NYSC is an abbreviation for National Youth Service Corporation. This is a program that spans for a year and only graduates can take. It is a paramilitary training course with volunteer services that youths who are graduates are obligated to do immediately after the completion of their educational year. It is open to university graduates, polytechnic graduates, graduates from college of education and some graduates from military school. This program started in 1973 by General Yakubu Gowon in a bid to foster peace, unity and build cohesion amongst tribes and regions of Nigeria. It was also set in motion to give youths a little military training for their own personal protection hence the reason for the orientation camp course.

Important documents to bring to the NYSC Orientation Camp
- Call-up letter
- Statement of result
- School identity card
- Covid testing verification slip (COVID green slip)
- Green card
- Medical fitness clearance certificate
Let’s pick them one after the other and explain their importance
- Call-up letter: This is a letter that indicates that indeed you have been called to serve your country. It certifies that you are no fraud and the registration you submitted was accepted and processed for that current batch.
- Statement of result: This is a document that states in simple terms that you are indeed a graduate from a government or federally recognized institution. This document cannot be issued to anyone who has not been cleared by the school as a graduate of the school. It therefore corroborates your graduate statement and indicates your result.
- School identity card: In most Nigerian institutions, whether federally owned, state owned or private, no student goes through the system from their first year to their final year without a card that proves that they are indeed students and were finished from that school. Therefore, this card and its photocopy is to show that you attended and finished from the said school.
- Covid testing verification slip: This document was introduced in 2020 after the COVID’19 and lockdown situation. Whether you have the covid vaccine card or not, you would be requested to fill a document at the point of NYSC registration indicating your compliance to being tested for the virus for the safety of everyone around you. After registering, you would then be required to print this document that shows that your registration went through. It is the first thing you would do in camp.
- Green card: This is a document that is made available after registration. It shows that the registration was successful.
- Medical fitness clearance certificate: This document certifies that you have been cleared medically, are not a direct harm to yourself and to the next person, are physically fit to do any tedious or strenuous activity and are safe to be associated with. The NYSC camp is as much a physically draining activity as it is a mentally draining one and the government is trying to prevent any eventuality from occurring while still keeping you safe.
Segments of the NYSC Orientation Scheme
It has four integral segments which every one of them must participate in during the one year that the program should run for. These segments are:
- The NYSC orientation camp: This is a camp course that spans for three weeks and during this segment of the year long program, the youths (graduates) are expected to be in an enclosed space with a regimented life. Their entire schedule is pre-planned and completely determined by the camp officials. They are taught various self-protection and life survival skills while being prepared for the yearlong course.
- Place of Primary Assignment (PPA): This is the place where the rest of this year long activity should take place. It is the place the youth (graduate) is expected to work at and carry out the vision and mission statement of the NYSC program at large,
- Community Development Service (CDS): Remember that the main purpose of the NYSC scheme is to bring about peace, unity and cohesion in the country and no state is exempted from this scheme. Therefore, the government uses the CDS (Community Development Service) program to foster growth and development in little communities. Seeing as the President or Governors cannot visit or touch every nook and cranny of the country with its size and population, they have sent the Corp members (participants of this NYSC program) as representatives in every locality and community to help develop community in order to enable the development of the country.
- Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Department (SAED): This department or segment of NYSC helps train and empower youth to be skillful with their hands and be bosses of their own. While the school encourages white-collar job, NYSC is a preacher of personally owned job as they believe that everyone should have a craft at hand that they can be the boss of in no time.

Conclusion
The NYSC is a paramilitary training and a very humbling experience for many. There are 36 states in Nigeria and all these states have their own NYSC camps even the Capital state too which makes the list 37. This article takes us through the location of the state and what to expect from every location as they are all packed with different and various experiences.
We strongly and highly recommend the NYSC practice to all graduate as it is a noble service and every citizen in the country respects and regards corpers (as they are fondly called) highly. Some aged people believe that you have not graduated if you do not wear the Khaki and boot just so they can shout “copashun” when they see you walking or taking a bus in public.
With an understanding that travelling might be a hassle, there is one in every state. Therefore, pick one close to you for the purpose of this noble service.
