What is a Nigerian International Passport?

A passport is a travel document issued by the government of a nation that certifies the identity and nationality of its holder, for the purpose of travelling outside the country.

A Nigerian international passport is a vital hard copy document issued to Nigerian citizens with the intent of travelling outside the country. As long as you are able to obtain a visa, you can travel anywhere in the world internationally with your Nigerian international passport.

To apply for a new passport, the Nigerian Immigration Services (NIS) now offers only electronic passports for the new Nigeria international passport applications. The electronic passports (e-passport), are classified as either "Standard" or "Official", depending on intended use. Nigerian citizens can apply for a Standard e-passport (green cover passport), while official e-passports (blue cover passport) are reserved for government officials and Nigerian diplomats.

You can also apply for your Nigerian passport either at the physical location of the Nigerian Immigration Services, or by making a submission through its website. Nigerian citizens who happen to reside outside of Nigeria can apply online or at the nearest Nigerian consulate.

Who Needs a Nigerian Passport?

Nigerians who, whether by birth, descent, registration, or naturalization, need to travel outside the country are required to get a Nigerian international passport, with specific categories like government officials or military personnel also eligible for official passports for state duties. Therefore, if you need to travel abroad for any reason, be it long-stay or short-stay purposes, your Nigerian international passport is your access to obtain a visa to any country of your choice.

The 32-page Nigerian international passport is commonly issued to people who do not travel internationally very often. However, people travelling for business purpose may want to consider applying for a 64-page passport, especially if your job requires you to take frequent international business trips throughout the year.

However, this doesn't mean leisure travelers cannot apply for the 64-page passport as well. Obtaining a 64-page passport has an advantage of saving you the stress of constantly needing to apply for new passports when needed.

Types of Passports

There are three kinds of fingerprint enhanced e-Passports that the Nigerian Immigration Service gives out. Normal passports (green) for Nigerians come in 32-page/5-year, 64-page/5-year, and 64-page/10-year, Official Passports (blue) for Government officials and Diplomatic passports.
