Yale Fox International Fellowship 2020 Graduate Student Exchange Program

Applications for the 2020 Yale Fox International Fellowship are now open. The Fox International Fellowship is a graduate student exchange program between Yale University and 20 world-renowned academic partners. The goal of the Fox International Fellowship is to enhance mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States and other countries by promoting international scholarly exchanges and collaborations among the next generation of leaders.

The Fox International Fellowship was established in 1988 by Mr. Joseph Carrère Fox (Yale Class of 1938) as a way to provide a peaceful intellectual exchange between Yale University and Moscow State University in the midst of the tense international environment of the Cold War.

Benefits of Yale Fox International Fellowship Programme

The Fox Fellowship is a tremendous opportunity to engage in research at world-renowned academic institutions and join a vibrant Fox Fellowship alumni/ae group.

All Fellows at Yale receive the same award, which is commensurate to the level of funding received by doctoral students in the graduate school. 

  1. Awards include round-trip travel, accommodations in rental housing provided by the Fox Fellowship and a generous living stipend to cover expenses not already provided for by existing funds that you may have at your disposal.
  2. The Fellowship will also cover health insurance.
  3. All fellows are also able to apply for grants from a research travel fund up to U.S.D $2000.
  4. Yale will sponsor you for a J-1 Visa.  Yale will also sponsor spouses and children for J-2 dependent visa(s).

Yale Fox International Fellowship Programme Courses

Requirements for Yale Fox International Fellowship Programme

  1. The Fox Fellowship is open to graduate and professional school students at Yale University. Doctoral candidates, Master’s students, and graduating seniors can apply.
    1. The Fox Fellowship is NOT open to postdoctoral applicants and international student proposing projects in their home country are NOT eligible.
  2. Students in doctoral programs should be finished with their coursework and students in masters or graduate professional programs should have administrative approval to interrupt their course work.
  3. Graduating masters and professional school students are eligible to apply.
  4. Graduating seniors of unusual distinction and with clearly focused research may also be considered.
  5. The Fox Fellowship places a strong emphasis on communicative competence in the host country language(s) to truly engage colleagues and establish long term personal relationships with people from the Fox Partner University and the larger community of that University and the overall Fox alumni/ae network.

Selection Criteria

  1. Personal character and leadership: The candidate must demonstrate commitment to serious research and a capacity for leadership and civic engagement in the larger community. 
  2. Strength of academic achievement: The candidate must demonstrate both excellence in relevant coursework as well as strong evidence of research ability in the field of endeavor they are proposing as their Fox Fellowship project.
  3. Quality of research proposal and fit with Fox focus fields: The candidate’s research project shows clear understanding of the alignment with the partner university resources and the larger goals of the Fox Fellowship.
  4. Language skills: Candidates for Fox Fellowships must demonstrate sufficient mastery of national or regional language skills relevant to their research projects as well as to thrive in the local and larger communities of the Fox Exchange partner university. For English-speaking countries with strong local or regional language bases, candidates with evidence of familiarity and interests in those languages, as relevant to their research and larger cultural engagement, may receive some competitive preference, e.g. for Legon, Ghana (Twi or Akan), Cape Town, South Africa (isiXhosa/isiZulu or Afrikaans); New Delhi, India (Hindi, Gujarati). Students without these language skills are also welcome to apply.
