Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies Postdoctoral Fellowship at University of Michigan 2020-2022
If you are a scholar who received your PhD since 2018, then the University of Michigan is inviting you to apply for Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies Postdoctoral Fellowship of the 2020-2022 academic session. The fellowship is only available to 2 lucky applicants.
This two-year fellowship supports multi-disciplinary research on the broad historical, political, economic, and societal conditions under which democracy and autocracy either emerge and endure or falter and fail. Upon admission, the WCED Postdoctoral Fellows will reside in the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor full time and are expected to focus on their own research, participate in workshops and events, and present at least one public lecture during their two-year fellowship.
If the students desire, they may be up for a teaching opportunity in the second year of their fellowship. The fellowship will begin in September 2020 - August 2022.

The Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies (WCED) promotes scholarship to better understand the conditions and policies that foster the transition from autocratic rule to democratic governance, past and present. Initially focusing on transitions in Europe and Eurasia, it will subsequently expand its scope to other emerging democracies across the globe.

WCED PhD Scholarship
Aim and Benefits of WCED PhD Scholarship
- Fellowships carry an annual salary of $50,000 and up to $7,000 in research funds during the post-doctoral appointment.
- Fellowship recipients will be eligible for U-M health, dental, and life insurance options (beginning September 1, 2020 through August 31, 2022).
- Fellows have full access to U-M library resources.
Requirements for WCED PhD Scholarship Qualification
- Open to applicants from all disciplines, though the majority of past applicants and Fellows have come from political science, sociology, and history;
- Fellows must have successfully defended and filed their dissertation before beginning the fellowship;
- Eligibility is restricted to those who have received their Ph.D. after January 1, 2018.

Interview date, Process and Venue for WCED PhD Scholarship
Applicants will be notified in March 2020. The fellowship period is from September 2020 – August 2022.

Candidates will be required to submit:
- WCED Postdoctoral Fellowship Application
- A two-page research plan that outlines the research project and how the fellow will spend his/her time during the fellowship period
- Curriculum Vitae
- A scholarly writing sample, such as a dissertation chapter, conference paper, or journal article
- Two letters of recommendation
