United Nations Human Rights Office 2020 – Humanitarian Funds Fellowship Programme

Applications are open for the United Nations Human Rights Office – Humanitarian Funds Fellowship Programme 2020. The fellowship aims to give young professionals with experience working for human rights organizations, notably on issues related to victims of torture and/or modern slavery, the opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge and skills of these issues within the United Nations system.

Through this programme, fellows will gain working-level experience with the United Nations human rights system in the field of torture and slavery, including the evaluation and management of grants. Upon completion of the programme, fellows will bring back acquired capacity and skills to their community and/or organization.

The fellow will contribute to the work of the Humanitarian Funds including through the following:

  1. Evaluating and analysing project applications and liaising with applicant organizations to provide technical assistance;
  2. Conducting substantive research on and analysis of developments concerning torture and contemporary forms of slavery in specific countries;
  3. Reviewing, recording and compiling information on best practices and lessons learned from grantees of the Funds;
  4. Conducing outreach and preparing promotional materials to enhance the visibility of the two Funds (website, brochures, etc.);
  5. Helping to organize and participating in the annual sessions of the Funds’ Boards of Trustees, including public events and policy discussions;
  6. Contributing to the work of other parts of the United Nations Human Rights Office as required, in particular.

Benefits of UN Human Rights Office Fellowship Programme

  1. The fellow will receive financial support from the UN Human Rights Office in the form of a monthly stipend to cover living expenses during the programme.
  2. A return flight ticket and health insurance will also be provided.
  3. The fellow will receive periodic briefings and on-the-job training about the United Nations human rights system and relevant thematic issues.

Requirements for UN Human Rights Office Fellowship Programme

  1. Applicants should have solid knowledge and at least two years of professional experience in human rights and/or related field, with a particular focus on torture and/or modern slavery;
  2. Knowledge of the United Nations system will be considered an asset;
  3. Fluency in spoken and written English is required; knowledge of another United Nations language, in particular French and/or Spanish, is an asset;
  4. Experience and/or knowledge of forms of direct assistance (including legal, medical, psychological and social services to victims of human rights violations), as well as experience in project management is also an asset;
  5. Qualified candidates working with organizations, which receive funding from the Humanitarian Funds, are encouraged to apply. Selected candidates are encouraged to share the knowledge and experience obtained during their fellowship to colleagues upon their return.

Candidates should submit their application directly to the Humanitarian Funds Secretariat no later than the deadline by e-mail: [email protected]. The application should contain the following:

  1. A fully completed and signed application form and;
  2. A letter of recommendation from the human rights organization where the applicant works/ed.
