TED Fellowship Program 2021 For Young Innovators Worldwide

Every year the TED Fellows program selects a new group of extraordinary, multidisciplinary individuals by open application. We look for innovators on the rise in their respective fields who are doing bold, original work.

The TED Fellows program provides transformational support to a global community of over 500 remarkable individuals who are collaborating across disciplines to spark future-shaping change around the world.

The TED Fellows Program recognizes people at work on future-shaping ideas, offering them tools to amplify the power of their vision. Each year, a new group of TED Fellows from around the world, and from every discipline, are welcomed into this international community of remarkable thinkers and doers who have shown unusual accomplishment, exceptional courage, strength of character, and potential to create positive change in their respective fields.

We are looking for individuals who have a proven track record of great work in their field, with fine character and a good heart. We are looking for individuals from all disciplines, and who have collaborative, kind personalities.

Benefits of Fellows program

Once selected, TED Fellows receive transformational support. The program offers them TED’s power to help articulate and amplify their vision. The program supports TED Fellows’ with the individual capacity-building required to take the global stage. We equip TED Fellows with public speaking and media training, professional coaching, educational programming and connect them to a global network of peers and industry leaders.

What does the TED Fellows program entail?

TED Fellows are part of a diverse, collaborative and global community of more than 500 emerging and established experts.

If selected, you’ll have the opportunity to give a TED Talk and gain valuable feedback from TED’s expert coaches on how to hone, express and communicate your work and ideas. You’ll receive career coaching and mentorship from our team of professional coaches and get public relations guidance and media training.

You’ll participate in virtual programming for TED Fellows and be invited to attend a TED conference. Note: conference invitations may be impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Requirements for Fellows program

All applicants must be 18 years or older by the time they apply.

If selected, what is the required time commitment as a Fellow?

You must be available to speak with the TED Fellows team via videoconference for approximately ten hours to develop your short TED Talk.

You must also be available to participate in and contribute to a thriving and connected global community, both virtually and in-person when possible. We are currently planning to invite our next class to an in-person conference in Vancouver (April 7-15, 2022), given the global pandemic this conference may be canceled and the TED Fellowship may become entirely virtual, depending on expert advice and local health safety protocols.

Is English proficiency a requirement?

Yes. The program is conducted in English, English proficiency is a requirement. However, we do not require applicants to be native English speakers. Many do, in fact, have other native languages.

Do I have to cover any costs if I become a TED Fellow?

No. TED will cover the costs of transportation to and from the TED conference, any visa you may need, accommodations and food while at the conference and conference registration.

Selection Process

Selection Process

TED Fellows are selected by the program staff, with extensive reference checking, fact checking and consultation with experts across all fields.

Your written application is central to our selection process. We read every application and encourage you to read our tips for applying before submitting your application. These tips are a guide to what we’re looking for when we review your application.

Applicants may receive requests for additional information from our team. But unless we reach out to you, we require no further information from you.

Ultimately, there is no algorithm for how we select our TED Fellows. We select Fellows based on their accomplishments in their respective fields, the potential impact of their work and also their character. The ideal applicant is collaborative in their pursuits and in their nature, and is at a moment in their career to maximize the support of the TED community.

Before submitting an application, we encourage you to learn more about the support the TED Fellows program provides and read our tips for applying.

To apply, you’ll submit an application online during our open application cycle. Your written application is the primary means for showcasing your work — tell us what makes your work unique and impactful. Please write clearly for a general audience and assume we know nothing about your field. We only accept applications written in English. We do not accept late submissions.

Once we’ve received your application, we start reading. We read every application, and therefore the selection process takes time. You can expect to hear back from us 8 months after the application closes. All applicants are notified whether or not they have been selected to join the TED Fellows program.
