Margaret McNamara Educational Grants (MMEG) Scholarships for Women from Developing Countries to Study in US & Canada 2020

Margaret McNamara Educational Grants (MMEG) provides grants to women from developing countries to help them further their education and strengthen their leadership skills so that they can improve the lives of other women and children in their countries as well.

This scholarship application for female students from Developing Countries provides grants to assist women pursue their education at schools in the USA and Canada, where the grant is tenable. 

Upon obtainment of their degree, these women will be required to return to or remain in their countries, or go to other developing countries, where they can work to improve the lives of women and/or children.

Benefits of MMEG Masters Scholarship

  1. Approximately $15,000 per scholarship recipient
  2.  The grant is a onetime award to last for the duration of study

Requirements for MMEG Masters Scholarship

Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  1. Be at least 25 years old at time of application deadline (see specific regional program application below);
  2. Be a national of a country listed on the MMEG Country Eligibility List (listed below);
  3. Be enrolled at an accredited academic institution when submitting application; and plan to be enrolled for a full academic term after award of the grant by the Board;
  4. Not be related to a World Bank Group, International Monetary Fund or Inter-American Development Bank staff member or spouse;

Selection Process

Important Notes: Please make sure to submit ALL documents as listed. Only complete applications will be accepted. Decisions will be announced by April.

Application Documents

Before starting the MMEG application process, please scan the following documents in digital form (pdf preferred, jpeg or png): 

  1. Identification (ID) card with photo: 
    1. national passport page with photo and date of birth, if studying outside your home country, or

    2. government/university-issued identity card with photo and birth date;

  2. Most recent proof of official registration from university (not their acceptance letter); 
  3. Most recent official university transcripts and/or reports
  4. Visa page or study permit page within current passport (if studying outside home country); 
  5. Second passport page with clear photo (in case of dual citizenship).

You will be asked to upload these documents at specific areas of the on-line application form.  You will also provide:

  1. Brief paragraphs of your personal story, and a description of how your studies, experiences and future plans are linked to your commitment to women and children in developing countries;
  2. An estimate of your financial situation for the coming academic year, and planned strategies to cover funding needs;
  3. A summary of your thesis (if applicable), including its objective, methodology and findings, and relationship to career goals.

Two reference letters are required.

  1. One referee must be a faculty member from your current university. Second referee may be from a person (non-family member) who can vouch for your character. At least one of the individuals must have known you for the equivalent of at least two semesters.
  2. Please contact two people from whom you would like to request a reference letter.  After receiving their confirmation, you will be asked to provide in the application form:
  3. You need to provide email addresses  of the two people providing references. They will each receive an email link from Embark Online to write their recommendation. When their recommendations are submitted, you will also be notified by Embark.

In addition to the general eligibility criteria, an applicant must: 

  1. already be enrolled as a full time student, with relevant student visa in national passport, and plan to continue studying full time in the following academic year;

  2. not hold US citizenship or permanent residency (green card) or Canadian citizenship or Canadian landed immigrant status

Remember to read the Application Checklist & FAQs before applying, and select the   "US-Canada program" in the first question of the application. If the program name  does not appear, the program may be closed to new applications.
