French Government 2024 Eiffel Excellence Scholarship for Masters & PhD Students

The Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Program was established by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs to enable French higher education institutions to attract top foreign students to enroll in their masters and PhD programs.

Its purpose is to train future foreign decision-makers in the private and public spheres in priority areas of study.

It gives opportunity to the future foreign decision-makers of the private and public sectors, in priority areas of study, and encourages applicants up to 25 years old from developing countries at master’s level, and applicants up to 30 years old from developing and industrialized countries at PhD level.

Benefits of French Government Eiffel Excellence Scholarship

Master level

  • Eiffel scholarship recipients receive a monthly allowance of €1,181 in addition to certain direct services, notably international airfare, domestic travel support, insurance, assistance in seeking housing, and cultural activities.

Doctoral level

  • Eiffel scholarship recipients receive a monthly allowance of €1,700 in addition to certain direct
    services, notably international airfare, domestic travel support, insurance, assistance in seeking
    housing, and cultural activities.
  • For both components of the program, the scholarship is awarded for the academic year corresponding to the call for applications.
  • The funded study period must begin between September 1 and December 31 of the year in which the scholarship is awarded.

Requirements for French Government Eiffel Excellence Scholarship

To be considered for the Eiffel Scholarship, applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Only foreign nationals are eligible to apply for a scholarship from the French Government.
  • In the case of dual nationality applicants, those with French nationality are ineligible.
  • for master’s courses, candidates must be no older than 30 on the date of the selection committee meeting, March 2021; at PhD level, candidates must be no older than 35 on the date of the selection committee meeting, March 2021.
  • only applications submitted by French educational establishments are accepted. These establishments undertake to enrol scholarship holders on the course for which they have been selected. Applications submitted by any other means shall not be considered. Furthermore, any candidate nominated by more than one establishment shall be disqualified.
  • scholarships are for students wishing to enrol on a master’s course, including at an engineering school, and for PhD students. The Eiffel Programme does not apply to French-run master’s courses abroad, as non-PhD scholarship holders must complete at least 75% of their course in France. It does not apply to training under an apprenticeship contract or a professional training contract either.
  • Educational establishments that shortlist non-French speaking applicants must ensure that their level of French is sufficient to enable them to integrate satisfactorily into the anticipated course
  • Combination with other scholarships: foreign students who, at the time of application, have already been awarded a French government scholarship under another programme are not eligible, even if the scholarship in question does not include social security cover.
  • Eiffel PhD scholarships: Establishments may nominate a candidate who was previously awarded an Eiffel scholarship at master’s level for a scholarship at PhD level. Candidates who have already been awarded an Eiffel scholarship once during their PhD cannot be awarded it for a second time. No application will be accepted for any student who applied previously but was rejected, even if the application is submitted by a different establishment or in another field of study.
  • Eiffel master’s scholarships: no application will be accepted for any student who applied previously but was rejected, even if the application is submitted by a different establishment or in another field of study. Students who have already been awarded an Eiffel scholarship at master’s level are not eligible to re-apply at master’s level.
  • Language skills: when pre-selecting non-French-speaking candidates, establishments must make sure that their language skills meet the requirements of the relevant course of study.

Selection Process

Eiffel Scholarship Timeline

Master level

  • The scholarship is awarded for: A maximum of 12 months for awardees entering the second year of a master’s program (M2)
  • A maximum of 24 months for awardees entering the first year of a master’s program (M1)
  • A maximum of 36 months for awardees entering an engineering program.

Doctoral level

  • Eiffel scholarships are awarded for a period of 6 to 36 months from September 1 of the award year.
  • The scholarship duration will be determined according to the following terms:
    • A scholarship of 36 months is subjected to a registration in year one. A scholarship of 6 to 18 months is determined according to the enrolment year, for all candidates, especially for those who are already engaged in a joint doctoral program (joint supervision of dissertation and/or dual degree), in partnership with an institution of higher education abroad:
    • A maximum of 6 months for awardees entering the third year of a doctorate program
    • A maximum of 12 months for awardees entering the second year of a doctorate program
    • A maximum of 18 months for awardees entering the first year of a doctorate program

How to Apply

Application Procedure

Step 1

  • Contact the Campus France office in your country of origin or the Cooperation and Culture Office of the French Embassy; both can advise you about your study plans.
  • You can also contact the French educational institution or research organization by visiting its website or by emailing or telephoning its office of international relations to learn how to apply for admission (including the date by which your application must be received).
  • Inform them of your wish to be considered for an Eiffel scholarship. It is your responsibility to choose the school or university that best suits your plans to study or conduct research in France.
  • All French institutions of higher education can nominate candidates for Eiffel scholarships.

Step 2

  • The educational institution accepts and supports your application for the Eiffel scholarship.
  • The institution files your application online using Campus France’s dedicated website.
  • Applications submitted directly by students or by institutions outside France will not be accepted.
