The African Research Fellowship (ARF) program, initiated in 2021 by ESA in collaboration with the African Union Commission, seeks to empower African researchers with a PhD or Master’s degree and extensive research experience to engage in Earth Observation (EO) R&D activities that address key challenges in Africa.

Benefits of ESA Africa Research Fellowship Program
Applicants will benefit the following:
- One-year fellowships for four African researchers to conduct their projects at ESA-ESRIN in Frascati, Italy, alongside ESA scientists.
- Access to the EO AFRICA Space Academy and Digital Campus, providing training and scientific tools.
- Collaboration opportunities with European scientists through the EO AFRICA Innovation Lab.
- A chance to contribute to African and global environmental and development agendas by leveraging EO data to address critical challenges in Africa.
Requirements for ESA Africa Research Fellowship Program
Applicants are to meet the following criteria:
- Applicants must hold a PhD or Master’s degree with substantial research experience.
- Proposals should focus on a one-year R&D project in either Water Resource Management or Food Security, utilizing Earth Observation satellite data.
- Projects addressing smallholder needs in agriculture or issues related to coastal processes and fisheries are especially encouraged.
Selection Process

- Research Proposal (use the template provided with the ARF package)
- Curriculum Vitae (CV) including a list of recent publications (maximum 3 pages)
- Copy of Identification (preferably passport)
- Scan of PhD or Master’s Diploma
- Two (2) Reference Letters
