Engineering for Development (E4D) Continuing Education Scholarship for Students from Developing Countries 2020 - 2021

The Engineering for Development (E4D) Continuing Education Scholarship Programme awards scholarships for travel and living expenses to international postgraduate students from low-income countries to attend continuing education programmes at ETH Zurich.

The goal of the programme is to enhance the knowledge and skills of future leaders who wish to contribute effectively to capacity development and poverty reduction in their home countries.

Field of Study:
All programmes of the ETH Zurich continuing education programme (MAS/CAS/DAS) are eligible for the scholarship. But only some programmes offer a fee reduction.

The following programmes offer a fee reducation:

  • MAS Nutrition and Health,D-HEST
  • Nutrition for Disease Prevention and Health (CAS ETH in Nutrition), D-HEST

To be eligible for the E4D PhD Scholarship, the candidate must hold a completed and recognised Master’s degree from a university and have proof of professional working experience of at least 2 years.

Benefits of E4D PhD Scholarship

The E4D Continuing Education Scholarship covers the following expenses: •

  1. Economy roundtrip ticket (max. 2’000 CHF) 2
  2. Visa fees
  3. Living allowance for the duration of the programme: 2’000 CHF per month if the programme is longer than 3 weeks (full-time programme). 800 CHF per week if the programme duration is up to 3 weeks.3/4
  4. ETH general tuition fee: 660 CHF per semester (in the form of a tuition fee waiver)

Note:

Programme fees will not be covered by the E4D Continuing Education Scholarship. The student needs to cover the programme fees by himself/herself or find another scholarship to cover this expenditure (not through this programme). The programme fees are listed on the corresponding webpages. Some of the programmes offer a fee reduction for candidates from low-income countries. Please get in touch with the programme management to inquire whether a fee reduction can be granted.

Requirements for E4D PhD Scholarship

  1. Candidate must hold a completed and recognised Master’s degree from a university 
  2. Proof of professional working experience of at least 2 years. 
  3. Minimal English standard is TOEFL level C1.Candidate must come from a country classified as Low Income or Lower Middle Income Country according to the DAC-list of the OECD.The candidate must have been admitted to an ETH MAS, DAS or CAS programme based on his/her academic and professional qualifications. Applications for the E4D scholarship scheme and the continuing education programme can be submitted in parallel.

Selection Process

Note: Candidates will only be considered for an E4D Continuing Education Scholarship if admitted to an ETH MAS, DAS or CAS programme. However, applicants are encouraged to submit the application to the MAS, DAS or CAS programme in parallel with the application for the E4D Continuing Education Scholarship.

As soon as the E4D programme office receives the formal admission letter, the application will be further processed.

Evaluation of the applications:

The E4D Committee of ETH Zurich, consisting of five ETH professors from different departments, reviews the applications and selects the scholarship recipients. The scholarship scheme is competitive. Applicants are notified at the latest two month after application deadlines.

How to Apply

The application process comprises two steps.

  1. Application to the selected MAS, DAS or CAS programme (independent from the E4D application).
  2. Application to the E4D Continuing Education Scholarship Programme.

Note: Candidates will only be considered for an E4D Continuing Education Scholarship if admitted to an ETH MAS, DAS or CAS programme. The admission confirmation letter from the School for Continuing Education is a compulsory part of the E4D application

Step 1: Application to MAS, DAS or CAS programme Consult the programme webpage and/or the programme management to receive information on the deadlines, programme fees, application procedures and application documentation for the selected MAS, DAS or CAS programme.

Step 2: Application for the E4D Continuing Education Scholarship Compulsory application documentation: »

  1. CV6 of the candidate »
  2. MSc or Masters Diploma and academic transcript(s) »
  3. 1-2 page application letter, stating the motivation to attend the programme and the impact for the candidate’s career development and beyond. »
  4. Two professional references »
  5. Formal admission letter by the School for Continuing Education confirming that the candidate is admitted to the MAS, DAS or CAS programme. »
  6. Certificate of employment. The certificate of employment letter must be sent to the E4D programme office directly through the employer (and not the candidate)
