World Habitat is an international not-for-profit organisation/foundation established in the United Kingdom. Our operations under the World Habitat trade mark are not endorsed by, affiliated with or otherwise linked to UN Habitat, other than in the context of the World Habitat Awards that are operated in partnership with UN-Habitat.
We are an international charity, made up of a dedicated team who work with people and projects all over the world to make positive action happen.
World Habitat is recognised by the Department of Public Information of the United Nations. Since 2006 we have held Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, reflecting our work in support of the goals of UN-HABITAT.
World Habitat traces its roots back to 1946 – just a year after the end of the Second World War. A small group of homeless ex-servicemen with just thirty-nine pounds and 10 shillings set up the East Midlands Housing Association in Coalville, Leicestershire UK. Led by Peter Elderfield, it built houses for people in housing need. Over the years it developed into a large and highly successful organisation that continues to operate to this day, providing subsidised social housing and building affordable homes for sale.
