The Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity programme is a funded fellowship based at the "International-Inequalities" Institute at the UK London School of Economics and Political Science. It is one of seven interconnected Atlantic Fellowships worldwide.

The Institute is looking for change-makers committed to fighting inequality, who will become Fellows and learn from scholars, innovators, activists, and social change organisations, while learning the latest academic research and expert insights on inequalities.

The Fellows will be bold and ready to challenge power; see the bigger picture of how inequalities are playing out; are imaginative and daring in the way they envision solutions; bring care and collaboration into their practice; recognise the significance of lived experience of inequality and whose own lived experience informs their practice; who are not focused on advancing their careers, but are truly committed to changing the world through collective and collaborative approaches.

Benefits of Atlantic Fellows Residential Fellows

For Residential Fellows:

1. Residential Fellows receive support from a dedicated LSE academic mentor, from the AFSEE Academic Lead through monthly meetings and regular check-ins, and via further opportunities for engagement offered throughout the year.
2. The Residential Track of the Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity programme is a funded fellowship. The fellowship includes full tuition fees, an £18,000 stipend to cover living costs while in London, travel to and from Cape Town for the South Africa module, and travel to and from London at the beginning and end of the active Fellowship, including reimbursement of visa fees.
3. Modest financial support is available for Fellows who have family care responsibilities. In the event of emergencies, the programme has a Resilience Fund to which Fellows can apply. Further information is available on request.

Requirements for Atlantic Fellows Residential Fellows

Applicants to the Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity programme must be able to demonstrate their ability to meet the following eligibility criteria.

Residential Fellows

1. Applicants must qualify for admission to the London School of Economics’ MSc Inequalities and Social Science. These requirements include a 2:1 degree or equivalent in any discipline. A background in social science and/or work experience in the social policy field are advantageous but not essential. Please refer to the LSE website for full details.
2. GRE/GMAT requirement: None.
3. Applicants must meet LSE’s standard English Language Requirement.
4. Applicants must have at least five years’ experience demonstrating courage, care, leadership and commitment in advancing equitable solutions to inequality.
5. Applicants who have attained a PhD, who have completed an MSc within the past three years, or who are currently studying for a degree, will not normally be considered for the Residential track.

Selection Process

TIMELINE

1. Applications open on 28 August 2019 for the 2020-21 cohort of Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity.
2. Applications close on 22 October 2019 at 11.59 GMT. We are unable to consider applications received after this time. All applications must be complete by this date to be considered.
3. On 4 February 2020, the application shortlist will be finalised. All applicants will be contacted and told whether or not they have been shortlisted.
4. All shortlisted applicants will be invited to interview. Online teleconferencing interviews will take place from 17 to 21 February 2020.
5. The final selection of the 2020-21 cohort of Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity will be made in early March 2020.
6. All shortlisted applicants will be notified of the programme’s decision by mid-March 2020.

Your application should give us a clear idea of you, your values and your work, in relation to the following criteria:

• Experience
  1. Deep commitment to social change, backed by at least five years of substantive real-world experience in challenging inequalities in activist, policy, campaigning, arts, media or other settings.
  2. Alignment with or interest in the International Inequalities Institute’s research themes.
• Clarity of Vision and future impact
  1. Innovative ideas, a clear sense of purpose, the courage to pursue lasting and meaningful change, and a plan for using the learning offered by the programme to produce real future impact, through an idea for a dissertation or project.
  2. Readiness to evolve and develop as a leader in ways that embrace and advance the principles of social and economic equity, and their practice.
  3. Potential to be instrumental in shaping an inspiring vision, direction and agenda for social change in specific geographies, fields, professions and beyond.
• Commitment and readiness
  1. Interest in learning from and engaging with different perspectives and experiences from across a range of contexts, and a willingness to navigate the challenges and opportunities inherent in complexity and diversity.
  2. Openness to fully engage with the whole Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity learning journey, including the intellectual and personal transformation this process entails.
  3. Willingness to actively contribute to a sustained peer-led, values-driven community.
  4. Commitment to work with and support others in achieving individual and collective impact.

For Residential Fellows Only

1. Ability to make a compelling case for how undertaking and successfully completing the MSc in Inequalities and Social Science will make a contribution to the applicant’s social change agenda.
2. A focused agenda and plan to use the knowledge and skills gained from the Msc.
