University of Bayreuth 2021-2020 Fellowships from “Africa Multiple” Cluster of Excellence – Germany

Applications are currently being invited from scholars who are working in the field of African Studies for the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence Fellowships in the Bayreuth Academy of Advanced African Studies.

This Program aims to reconfigure African Studies at the conceptual and the structural levels. If selected, fellows are expected to collaborate with Bayreuth-based scholars, especially by creating synergies with one of the cluster’s six Research Sections, which includes;  Moralities, Knowledge, Mobilities, Arts & Aesthetics, Affiliations, and  Learning. Fellows also have the opportunity to team up with others in research groups for joint work on common research interests, and are encouraged to publish results of their work in one of the cluster’s outlets.

Benefits of Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence

Fellows will be given office space and access to the excellent Africana library resources at the University of Bayreuth. In terms of remuneration, fellowships include travel subsidies and monthly stipends. For long-term fellows, the fellowship may come in form of a grant to be used for a “teaching buyout” at the fellow’s home institution.

A. Living Allowance (reimbursement of living expenses):

  1. Case 1: 2500 EUR per month for Fellows who do not receive any remuneration from their home institution
  2. Case 2: 1000 EUR per month for Fellows who are on leave from their home institution with salary but without replacement (sabbatical)
  3. Case 3: Buy-out: for Fellows who will continue to receive remuneration from their home institution; on the basis of a contract between the University of Bayreuth and the home institution, costs incurred for a teaching replacement will be reimbursed (proof of costs is required). Upper limit: 40,000 EUR for 6 months

B. Travel Cost (reimbursement of travel expenses, against receipt):

  1. Reimbursement of travel expenses to and from Bayreuth for the Fellow and accompanying spouse / partner and child(ren), if applicable

C. Mobility Allowance (compensation for additional mobility costs, if applicable):

  1. 500 EUR per month for individual Fellows + 250 EUR per month for accompanying spouse / partner, if applicable + 250 EUR per month for accompanying minor child(ren), if applicable (regardless of the number of children)

Requirements for Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence

 Scholars with a PhD and proven track record in the study of Africa are eligible to apply. They may come from Germany or abroad, and from any discipline in the humanities and the sci- ences. Africa-based scholars are encouraged to apply. During the fellow- ship period, residence at the University of Bayreuth is mandatory.

Application Documents

  1. Your complete list of academic publications (to be uploaded as one pdf file);
  2. Your CV (to be uploaded as one pdf file);
  3. A letter of motivation in applying for a BA fellowship and indicating the envisaged time period of the fellowship (max. 3,500 characters, roughly equivalent to 500-600 words);
  4. A brief statement (max. 3,500 characters, roughly equivalent to 500-600 words) sketching the contribution you offer to make to the Cluster’s agenda and research sections (in theoretical, methodological, or thematic terms), and including the names of the Bayreuth-based scholar(s) with whom you intend to collaborate;
  5. A brief statement explaining how gender and diversity aspects feature in your project (max. 2,000 characters, roughly equivalent to 300-350 words);
  6. An outline (max. 6,500 characters, roughly equivalent to 1,000-1,100 words) of the research project you are proposing to undertake as a BA Fellow. Applicants for Fellow Groups should describe their envisaged synergies here;
  7. Names and contact details of two referees.

All proposals must demonstrate your commitment to the Cluster’s aims and objectives and detail the proposed contribution to one of the Cluster’s Research Sections.
