The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program 2020-2020

The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) is looking for women and men from developing countries with relevant professional experience and are inclined towards supporting their countries' development efforts, who wish to pursue a master degree program in a development-related topic.

The scholarship is available for students studying Tax Policy and Management course.

To such applicants, The JJ/WBGSP scholarship will provide tuition for the graduate program and the cost of basic medical insurance, a monthly allowance of JPY 152,000 to cover living expenses, including books.

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must be a national of a Bank member country that is eligible to receive Bank financing and not hold dual citizen of any developed country.

Benefits of Japan/World Bank Masters Scholarship

The JJ/WBGSP scholarship provides the recipient with the following benefits:

  1. Economy class air travel between your home country and the host university at the start of your studyprogram and immediately following the end of the scholarship period. In addition to the two-way airtravel, scholars will receive a US $500 travel allowance for each trip;
  2. Tuition for your graduate program and the cost of basic medical insurance usually obtained through the university.
  3. A monthly allowance of JPY 152,000 to cover living expenses, including books.

The JJ/WBGSP scholarship does NOT cover:

  1. VISA application?s? costs
  2. Expenses to bring and/or support a scholar’s family members;
  3. Extra-curricular courses or training;
  4. Language training not provided by the graduate program;
  5. Additional travel during the course of the study program;
  6. Expenses related to research, supplementary educational materials, field trips, participation in workshops/seminars, or internships; or
  7. Educational equipment such as computers.

Japan/World Bank Masters Scholarship Courses

Requirements for Japan/World Bank Masters Scholarship

  1. Be a national of a Bank member country that is eligible to receive Bank financing and not be a national of any country that is not eligible to receive the Bank financing.
  2. Not hold dual citizen of any developed country.
  3. Be in good health with respect to the capacity to be a productive scholar for the duration of the Graduate Program, as certified by a medical doctor.
  4. Hold a Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent with superior academic achievement earned at least three years prior to the Scholarship Application Deadline.
  5. Not received any scholarship funding to earn a Graduate degree or its equivalent from any sources funded by the government of Japan.
  6. Be employed in a paid and full time position at the time of the Scholarship Application Deadline unless the applicant is from a country identified in the World Bank’s “Harmonized List of Fragile Situations”.
  7. Have, by the time of the Scholarship Application Deadline, at least three years of recent full time paid professional experience in the field of tax policy and administration after a Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent in the applicant’s home country or in another developing country; If the applicant’s Admission Information is from a country identified in the World Bank’s “Harmonized List of Fragile Situations” at the time of the Scholarship Application Deadline, the recent professional experience does not have to be full time or paid.
  8. Not be an Executive Director, his / her alternate, staff of the World Bank Group(the World Bank, International Development Association, International Finance Corporation, Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency, and International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes), or a close relative of the aforementioned by blood or adoption with the term “close relative” defined as: Mother, Father, Sister, Half-sister, Brother, Half-brother, Son, Daughter, Aunt, Uncle, Niece, or Nephew.
  9. Admitted to the University unconditionally or conditionally only upon securing financing.
  10. Demonstrate proficiency in the English language at the level of a TOEFL score of 550(PBT), 213(CBT) or 79 (iBT) or better, or an IELTS score of 6.0 or better.
  11. Meet any other criteria for admission established by Keio University.
  12. Applicants must not be currently pursuing a Master’s or Ph.D. program in industrialized countries.
  13. Applicants must not have had one or more years of training / studies and / or residency in an industrialized country.
  14. Applicants must not be permanent residents / nationals of industrialized countries.

NOTE:
Before you fill in the application form, please read the guidebook carefully. Please make sure to type legibly with black or blue ink. Application documents should be single-sided.

Keio will send applicants the admission process outcome by mail by late January 2020.

Keio University does not respond to any inquiries before the above date. As a rule, results of the application will not be given by phone or fax.

  8. Diploma / certificate of graduation [Original or certified by the university]
  9. True copy of passport, birth certificate or any OFFICIAL document showing the date of birth of the applicant
  10. Proof of Employment

Documents (2)-(4) must be typed in.

Please make a copy of all the application documents for your records. The World Bank may ask you to submit the copy in the selection process by the World Bank.

How to Apply

Interested and qualified? Go to The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program on wwwdc01.adst.keio.ac.jp to apply
  1. Applications are accepted upon completion of Online Registration and Submission of Application Documents.
  2. Online Registration must be completed by October 24, 2019.
  3. Application documents must be submitted by mail and must reach the Keio University by October 31, 2019. We do not accept applications via fax or email.
  4. Send the original copy of the application documents. Copies of the application will not be accepted.
  5. Please make a copy of all the application documents for your records. The World Bank may ask you to submit the copy in the selection process by the World Bank.
  6. Late applications and incomplete applications will not be accepted. Keio will not notify applicants of missing  documents.
  7. Application documents may also be downloaded from the homepage of the Master’s Degree Program in Taxation Policy and  Management.
  8. Applicants who have applied for a program offered by Keio and have passed the selection process by Keio will be asked to complete additional online application by the World Bank, which will make the final admission  decision.
