Benefits of American University Global Leader Scholars Program

The 2025 AU EGL scholarship covers all billable AU expenses (full tuition, room, and board) for two international students who will need a non-immigrant visa (preferably an F-1 or J-1 student visa) to study in the United States. The scholarship does not cover non-billable expenses such as mandatory health insurance, books, airline tickets, taxes, and miscellaneous expenses which students will need to pay out of pocket (approximately US$4,000 per year).

The AU EGL scholarship is renewable for a total of four years of undergraduate study, based on continued satisfactory academic performance. Students interested in all majors offered at AU are eligible to apply.

New: AU EGL partial scholarships! We’re excited to share that in addition to the two full 2025 AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarships covering all billable expenses, AU will also offer up to eight additional generous AU EGL partial scholarships valued at up to US$40,000/per year.

How to Apply

The AU Emerging Global Leadership Scholarship application process involves two steps:

  • Step 1: Applicants who wish to be considered for AU EGLS full or partial scholarships must first submit their Common or Coalition application and all supporting documents before December 1, 2024.
  • Step 2: Submit the AU EGL Scholarship application and essays via your applicant portal by the required December 1, 2024 special program deadline. You must complete Step 1 before submitting the AU EGLS application. Late applications will not be considered.

AU Emerging Leader Scholarship applicants should apply Regular Decision for fall 2025 (not Early Decision ED or Early Action EA) and will be notified by April 1st, 2025.

Apply online using the Common Application or Coalition Application. Your file will not be reviewed until all of the materials below have been received by the Office of Admissions:

  • Completed application, including essay and CV/Resume
  • Application fee of U.S. $75; no fee waivers are available.
    • Only first-year students applying for the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship and/or referred directly by EducationUSA or other non-government organizations may be eligible to receive an application fee waiver on a case-by-case basis. All other applicants must submit the U.S. $75 application fee.
  • Academic records for grades 9-12 with official transcripts and certified English translations (if applicable), for each secondary institution attended. Students who study in 3-year secondary school systems only need to provide transcripts for those three years.
  • One academic letter of recommendation from a teacher is required; one letter from the school counselor/principal/headmaster is also strongly recommended.
    • Note: Students cannot submit their own secondary-school transcripts or recommendation letters. These must be uploaded to the Common or Coalition Application directly by the school's counselor/teacher or mailed per courier instructions below.
  • Demonstrated English proficiency
  • No SAT or ACT Needed! AU does not evaluate SAT or ACT scores for students (including U.S. citizens) graduating from secondary schools outside the United States.
  • Interruption of Studies Statement if you have already graduated from secondary school at the time of application.

The following item is only required from students who need a student visa (F or J):

  • NEW: The AU Declaration of Finances Form (AU DFF) must be submitted by the application deadline and must reflect at least US$81,620 for first year of study and living expenses. Be prepared to pay at least this amount for each additional year at AU.

NB: No additional application process is needed to be eligible for AU EGL partial scholarships. Partial scholarship candidates will be selected from talented applicants who complete the AU EGL scholarship process successfully. If you are recommended for an AU EGLs partial scholarship, you will need to submit proof of additional funds beyond the initial US$4,000 for the difference not covered by the AU EGLS partial scholarship. For example, if you are offered US$40,000/year, you will need to submit financial documents confirming US$42,000 on account for your first year instead of the full estimated costs of US$81,620.
