African Doctoral Academy (ADA) Summer School at Stellenbosch University for African Students 2020

The African Doctoral Academy (ADA) is privileged to offer to a limited number of Doctoral candidates the opportunity to study at the ADA Summer School at Stellenbosch University, South Africa in January 2020.

The aim of the funding is to give successful candidates the chance to attend an ADA Doctoral School and spend time at a world-class research university, building their individual capacity and resilience for the journey ahead.

This Summer the ADA will offer 21 courses over two weeks which includes six non-compulsory one day courses (Saturday, 11 January 2020) and 15 week-long courses in Research Design and Methodology (Quantitative and Qualitative), Mixed Methods Research Design as well as courses in analytical techniques and software applications (such as SPSS, R ATLAS.ti and the newly added MaxQDA), Preparing for a PhD and Writing and Publishing articles.

The African Doctoral Academy (ADA), housed within the Africa Centre for Scholarship (ACS) serves to coordinate and strengthen excellence in doctoral education at Stellenbosch University (SU) and across the African continent. ADA PhD Scholarship

Aim and Benefits of ADA PhD Scholarship

Successful candidates will be awarded the following as part of the programme:

  1. Two, week-long courses at the ADA Summer School.
  2. The option to attend a one day course (11 January).
  3. Self-catering accommodation in Stellenbosch.
  4. Transport to visit Cape Town on Sunday 12 January.
  5. Return Economy airfare to and from Cape Town International Airport, if applicable.
  6. Ground Transport to and from Cape Town International Airport.
  7. We request that the candidate’s home institution sponsors the candidate’s daily subsistence allowance and visa fees if needed, as a token of good faith in support of their PhD candidate.

Please note that changes to flights or additional night’s stay will be at your own cost. Flights are determined from the home institutions where the delegates are registered. The accommodation is student-style but walking distance from the venues and equipped with a kitchen.

Stellenbosch University students will not be offered this option, air travel is booked from the home institution.

Requirements for ADA PhD Scholarship Qualification

Afican Doctoral Academy is pleased to offer full scholarships (fees, airfare and accommodation) to delegates across South Africa and Africa, as well as a select number of awards for SU candidates based in Stellenbosch. Eligible candidates can be from any discipline and will be enrolled at their home institution by 1 February 2020 and have been enrolled for no more than 12 months by 6 January 2020.

  1. If your participation in the Summer School is dependent on the bursary, we suggest that you wait for the outcome before applying to avoid duplication. We will try to ensure that you get your first choice of workshop, so there is not need to apply to the school before knowing your award status.
  2. Stellenbosch University registered candidates can apply via this stream – we include a field to indicate your affiliation with the university.
  3. Preference will be given to African (including South African) students studying at institutions in Africa.
  4. We strongly encourage and promote women to apply for the bursaries.

How to Apply

Interested and qualified? Go to African Doctoral Academy (ADA) on to apply
  1. Applicants must complete the online form (link below) to submit their details and apply to take part in the programme. This includes a field with a 300 word motivation of how the Summer School would benefit your research and journey as a PhD candidate. The Application link is at the bottom of this page.
  2. Applicants have to upload the following documents as part of the application process. No documents will be accepted by email. Please make use of the following naming convention: your surname.document_type.programme (for example smit.curriculumvitae.edp.doc).

Your application will not be considered as complete if you do not submit all the required documentation in full. In this case you will be unable to submit the form if all documents are not uploaded.

  1. ?A 300 word motivation on why you would benefit from the residency in general, and specifically how the workshops selected would benefit your research and add to the successful completion of your degree (in line on the form)
  2. Curriculum Vitae (Resume)
  3. Brief description of your research (roughly 400 words
  4. A written approval / referee report
    1. We will a?ward a bonus point during the evaluation process if your supervisor also states your case and your suitability for the programme, in addition to simply endorsing your application.
    2. On your university letterhead & containing your supervisor’s signature by the current (home) supervisor or head of department to endorse the applicant’s application. This will indicate the home supervisor’s approval for the applicant to participate in the ADA’s Summer School and provide legitimacy of applicant’s intention.
  5. Proof of registration where possible, otherwise a separate motivation from the home supervisor is required, confirming registration by 1 February 2020 at your home institution.
  6. After a vigorous selection process, the results will be made available shortly after the closing date with the intention being to allow candidates enough time to arrange for their visas and leave to travel.
