The Josephine Kponee Student Fellowship Award 2025

The Josephine Kponee Fellowship Award was created with the purpose of sponsoring academic, research, and technological projects in support of higher education for Ogoni women. Inspired by Josephine Kponee, an Ogoni woman who valued education in young women, the award strives to empower promising young Ogoni women.

Kponee-Shovein Foundation Josephine Fellowship Award Benefits

The foundation will award a phenomenal Ogoni student with a full tuition scholarship over the course of their academic program and payment of a yearly stipend for academic materials and necessary living expenses.

Requirements for Kponee-Shovein Foundation Josephine Fellowship Award

  • Applicant Must be a female student 
  • Must be an Indigene of Ogoni 
  • Must be studying in any accredited university in Nigeria
  • To maintain the award, the student must maintain  first class honors or high second class upper division honors (i.e., >4.0) each academic year.

Selection Process

The top applicants from each cycle will be designated “finalists” and will participate in an interview with the organization founders. The award recipient, selected from the top finalists, will be notified by the end of each year, and must have an in-person interview in Port Harcourt with the Chief Operating Officer to receive stipend and tuition support. Additionally, she must have her school ID card, local government identification letter, and tuition statement verified by the Chief Operating Officer to receive tuition support. She will begin to receive stipend and tuition support from the program in the beginning of each academic year.

How to Apply

To apply to become a Josephine Kponee Fellow, please fill out the Josephine Kponee Fellowship Application Form. Additionally, please send together the form and the following documents to [email protected]:

  1. Essay 1, Maximum length 1000 words: describe your motivations for pursuing your area of study, reasons for applying for the fellowship award, and career plans upon graduating.
  2. Essay 2, Maximum length 1000 words: Tell us about your experiences as an Ogoni indigene and how the Ogoni struggle has informed and shaped who you are and your experiences.
  3. Official scanned transcripts (JAMB score for those beginning their first year, university transcripts for continuing undergraduates) from their current institution.
  4. Resume/curriculum vitae
  5. Two professional letters of recommendation from your teachers.  Letters of Recommendations must be sent by the recommender directly to [email protected]
