SA-GER-CDR 2020-2021 Masters & PhD Scholarships for African Students-South Africa and Germany

For applicants from Sub-Saharan African countries with an excellent academic record, the DRD – Institute of Development Research and Development offers DAAD merit scholarships per year. The scholarship will be taken at University of the Western Cape, South Africa and while scholarship and internship will be at Ruhr-University of Bochum, Germany.

In order to adequately prepare the next generation of leaders through research-oriented training it is not sufficient to have the possibility to award scholarships to promising candidates from all over Sub-Saharan Africa, but it is also necessary to maintain a strong research focus on the work of the centre and to cooperate closely with other leading universities in the region.

Benefits of SA-GER-CDR Masters Scholarship

  1. Scholarships include monthly allowances of 650 Euro plus travel allowances for Master candidates and 900 Euro plus travel allowances for PhD candidates.
  2. Tuition and registration fees are covered by the Scholarship Programme.

SA-GER-CDR Masters Scholarship Courses

Requirements for SA-GER-CDR Masters Scholarship

Scholarship applicants are adviced to carefully read about the specific entry requirements and course application procedure of the programme of their choice. The information is available from the respective programmes sections.

In addition to programme requirements, all applicants have to meet the following requirements:

  1. Applicants should be from Sub-Sahara Africa
  2. Applicants should have an outstanding academic record – at least 70% for your last degree
  3. Applicants should apply within 6 years of having completed their previous degree
  4. The study must have been completed at an internationally recognised university
  5. The previous degree (Baccalaureus or Master) should have been an academic discipline which is related to Development Studies or Public Administration
  6. South African students are required to have an honours degree in order to be admitted to a Masters degree course. Other students need the equivalent of a 4 year undergraduate degree
  7. Applicants must provide evidence of proficiency in English, both written and spoken. This can be TOEFL test or a similar standard test or a letter from an academic institution
  8. Work and/or voluntary experience in your field of interest would be a recommendation
  9. Women are encouraged to apply
  10. South African students are encouraged to apply
  11. Applicants must be able to study fulltime at the UWC for the required period.

Application Documents

When using the e-form, you will have to upload the following documents, so please prepare them before you fill in the form:

  1. a letter of application, motivating your application,
  2. a copy of your passport
  3. a CV, also indicating relevant work experience as intern or as employee: Please use the europass CV form available at https://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/en/home
  4. an academic transcript from your last university,
  5. certified copies of all academic certificates (in case that the graduation only takes place after the deadline expired, please submit a letter from the respective authorities of your university, certifying that you will graduate until end of 2020).
  6. an academic reference and if applicable a professional reference. In case that referees want to send the reference independently, they should send it to [email protected], indicating the applicant's name.
  7. MA applicants will have to write a one page paper about one of three given topics (to be uploaded in the e-form). Below you find the topics of the Call:
