IDRC Doctoral Research Awards 2020

IDRC is now accepting applications from masters and PhD students to study at any canadian university. This is a research grant which will enable qualified and selected candidates to pursue their edcational aspiration.

IDRC has helped graduate students undertake thesis research in the field of international development since 1982. IDRC Doctoral Research Awards are intended to build capacity and develop research skills in Canada and the Global South to improve the lives of people in the developing world.

Benefits of IDRC Doctoral Research Awards

This award will cover research costs for a maximum of 12 months in the field. If your field research exceeds 12 months, you must cover additional costs from another source of funding.

Requirements for IDRC Doctoral Research Awards

Candidates must meet the following requirements to be eligible:

  1. You must be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada, or a citizen of a developing country, excluding countries in southern and eastern Europe, South Caucasus, and Central Asia (but including Afghanistan). 
  2. You must be enrolled at a Canadian university at the doctoral level (you must have completed several courses of the doctoral program, but not necessarily all courses, when you submit your application).
  3. Your research proposal must be approved by your thesis supervisor. Please provide proof.
  4. Your proposed field research must be conducted for a doctoral dissertation and must take place in one or more developing countries (see list of exceptions below).
  5. Your field research must be relevant to one of six development outcome areas to which IDRC aims to contribute through its work. These are:
  • Health equity
  • Inclusive governance
  • Sustainable and inclusive growth
  • Climate resilience and sustainable food systems
  • Inclusive education
  • Strong science and innovation systems

They also encourage proposals that explore the impacts of and resilience to shocks such as the current COVID-19 pandemic, from the perspective of any of the areas above. Applications proposing field research outside of these areas will not be considered.

You must provide evidence of affiliation with an institution or organization in the developing region(s) in which the research will take place.

You must have completed coursework and passed comprehensive exams before taking up the award.

You may not be in receipt of two or more active IDRC awards at the same time; these include the IDRC Research Awards.

Selection Process

Applications that are complete, that meet the eligibility criteria, and whose research subjects are deemed to fit with the development outcome areas listed above, will be forwarded to an IDRC selection committee. External evaluators may occasionally be involved. 

Candidates recommended for an award will be advised by email in October or November 2020. 

Candidates not recommended for an award will also be informed by email; however, this email will be sent via the online application system. Note that your server may not recognize the address and may send it to your junk or spam folder. Please see Technical FAQ 4 in the Technical FAQ for details on how to avoid this problem.

Interested and qualified? Go to International Development Research Center (IDRC) on idrc-crdi.smapply.io to apply
  1. Complete the privacy statement, the eligibility questionnaire, and the application form. 
  2. Upload all scanned copies of the documents requested below.
  3. All documents should be submitted in either English or French (Canada’s two official languages).
  4. Submit your application by 4:00 pm EDT the day of the deadline.
  5. Incomplete and late applications will NOT be considered.
