HEARD 2020 PhD Scholarships for Young Africans at University of KwaZulu-Natal South Africa

The Health Economics and HIV/AIDS Research Division (HEARD) based at the University of KwaZulu-Natal is inviting applications for the 2020 PhD Scholarships for young Africans. This scholarship, if selected, you be awarded R540, 000 as the scholarship value and to be eligible for this scholarship, you must be ready to be in resident in Durban, South Africa and the African Continent for at least two years.

Benefits of HEARD PhD Scholarship

The value of each scholarship is R540, 000. It will be paid in equal tranches over three years. Tranche payments will be paid dependent on a satisfactory progress report. Successful candidates are required to be based in Durban, South Africa, for the duration of the scholarship, with the exception of the time during which they may undertake field research elsewhere.

Requirements for HEARD PhD Scholarship

Applications are invited from citizens of all African countries. Female candidates and, in the case of South Africa, those from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, are especially encouraged to apply.

Applicants must: 

  1. Hold a Master’s Degree (first or upper second class pass or its equivalent).
  2. Have demonstrable research experience.
  3. Undertake to register for a PhD dissertation (full time) at the University of KwaZulu–Natal (UKZN). 
  4. Make a commitment to remain on the African continent for at least TWO years after graduation

Selection Process

  1. The first scholarship tranche will be released on proof of PhD registration and the opening of a South African bank account.
  2. If you have not received a reply within 8 weeks of the closing date, kindly note your application is unsuccessful 

Application Documents

  1. A letter of motivation.
  2. CV: An eight to ten page concept note on one of the three above-mentioned three research questions.
  3. Certified copies of both your academic qualifications and of your full academic records. In the case of qualifications obtained from non-English speaking countries and English translationmust be included.
  4. A certified copy of your ID/passport.
  5. Two letters of reference, at least one of which must be academic.
  6. The second can be from an individual of professional standing.
