Google for Startups Accelerator 2020: Sustainable Development Goals for Social Impact Startups

If so, this opportunity being presented by Google for startup is for you. Seize this moment by applying to the accelerator programme.

The goal of the Google for Startups Accelerator: Sustainable Development Goals is to empower technology startups to build and scale viable social impact companies to solve the world’s biggest problems with the best of Google: their people, their network, and their advanced technology.

They expect to run multiple cohorts of startups through this accelerator over the next several years. Over time, they want to gather a portfolio of startups from around the world that are collectively working on the full range of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. For their first class, they have chosen to focus on startups that are based in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Benefits of Google Sustainability Development Goals

Startups accepted into the sustainability accelerator can expect the following equity-free support from Google:

  1. 1:1 mentoring and support from a combination of Google mentors and carefully chosen external mentors
  2. Assistance with technology, product, design, growth (including fundraising), and leadership training
  3. Pairing with a Google Startup Success Manager to help connect your startup with specific resources within and outside Google
  4. Inspirational keynote talks, panel discussions, and workshops with relevant experts
  5. Membership in a collaborative, supportive community of relevant social impact partners

Requirements for Google Sustainability Development Goals

They are looking for:

  1. Startups should have a technology-based product. In particular but not exclusively, we’re best positioned to work with startups that address a unique problem with data/artificial intelligence or machine learning.
  2. Startups should have some level of market traction with their product/service and are past the “idea stage” with some initial customer validation.
  3. Startups should be able to identify a large market opportunity for significant impact. 
  4. Startups should equally be driven by both the business case for the product/service and the social impact that their product/service can have. 
  5. The startup’s founding team and/or key team members should be able to demonstrate that they have the technical skills, business skills, and social impact mindset to grow a company in the social impact sector.

Physical commitment is only required for 3 weeks.

Selection Process

Here’s the schedule for the accelerator (subject to change!):

  1. Bootcamp/High Touch Point 1: Berlin, March 23rd
  2. Tech Sprint/High Touch Point 2: Tel Aviv, June - Date TBD
  3. Graduation/High Touch Point 3: San Francisco, September - Date TBD

Google will cover travel expenses for these 3 weeks.
