Fulbright/U.S. Consulate 2022/2023 Foreign Program For Nigerian Postgraduate Students

The Public Affairs Section of U.S. Mission Nigeria is pleased to announce the annual call for applications for the Fulbright Foreign Student Program for the 2022/2023 academic year. The Fulbright Foreign Student Program is a research program funded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in New York.

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program opens annually with 4000 Scholarships awarded every year to deserving students. Foreign students from across Africa, Asia, Middle East, Europe and Eurasia, the Americas and more are can apply for this fully funded opportunity to study in the United States

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program enables graduate students, young professionals and artists from abroad to study and conduct research in the United States. The program operates in more than 160 countries worldwide. Approximately 4,000 foreign students receive Fulbright scholarships each year.

About Fulbright Program

The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) sponsors the Fulbright Program under policy guidelines established by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB) and in cooperation with bi-national Fulbright Commissions and the Public Affairs Sections of U.S. Embassies abroad. Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarship


Aim and Benefits of Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarship

The grant covers the grantee’s round-trip airfare to the U.S., a settling-in allowance, monthly stipend, housing allowance, books-and-supplies allowance, and computer allowance. The grant also covers basic university health insurance as a primary insurance coverage and the Fulbright ASPE health benefit as secondary coverage.

The Fulbright scholarships (USA) provides full funding to its beneficiaries and generally covers the grant funds tuition, textbooks, airfare, a living stipend, and health insurance.


Requirements for Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarship Qualification

To be eligible for a grant:

  1. Applicants must be citizens or nationals of Nigeria, or permanent residents holding a valid passport issued by the government of Nigeria.
  2. Applicants must be DOCTORAL OR PHD students who have completed a significant amount of their doctoral program in Nigerian universities and have the endorsement of their home institution.
    Note: MASTERS and First-Degree applicants are NOT qualified to apply for this program.
  3. Applicants must have an outstanding academic record and high level of English proficiency.
  4. Applicants must take their first TOEFL exam by May 2021.
  5. Applicants must meet the minimum score on required standardized tests (TOEFL: a score of 90)
  6. Applicants must have high motivation and a serious commitment to completing the program as scheduled and to returning home.
  7. Only applicants with strong proposals, outlining their research objectives, methodology, time-frame, and justification for conducting the research in the U.S. will be short-listed for interviews.
  8. Preference will be given to applicants who have not studied in the U.S.
  9. Those in business, law and accounting should understand that most U.S. institutions rarely accept research students in these fields due to high demand for full-time programs and tuition concerns. Therefore, we face great challenges in finding placements for such grantees unless their proposals are tilted toward economics, development-related areas, democracy, human rights and conflict resolution.

GENERAL ELIGIBILITY

Fulbright scholarship or the Fulbright Foreign Student Program is open to students of all nationalities. However, program eligibility and selection procedures vary widely by country.

  • If your country is not listed on the dropdown (see application procedures), then you are not eligible to apply.
  • Basically, you must have completed undergraduate education and hold a degree equivalent to a bachelor’s degree to be able to enroll for the Fulbright Foreign Student Program
  • Academic excellence may also be taken into consideration during selection

The Fulbright program is a popular program, the Public Affairs Office will ONLY NOTIFY SHOTRTLISTED CANDIDATES.


Documents Required for Application

All applicants must fill out the application forms completely and attach their supporting documents online:

  1. 3 academic and professional references,
  2. Curriculum Vitae,
  3. Academic transcripts from each post-secondary institution attended and writing sample.

Program eligibility and selection procedures vary widely by country. Please use the drop-down menu here to find information about the Fulbright Program in your home country, including eligibility requirements and application guidelines.

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program is administered by binational Fulbright Commissions/Foundations or U.S. Embassies.

A complete application includes:

  1. An online application which includes:
    1. A clearly written research objective.
    2. Professional resume.
  2. Three letters of reference specifying the personal, academic and professional competence of the candidate (submitted electronically and attached to the online application).
  3. Student copy of academic transcripts from each post-secondary institution attended should be scanned and attached to the online application if available.
  4. TOEFL score report.

Hard copies of official academic transcripts from higher institutions should be forwarded to our office by regular mail.

For Candidates in the South/ South- East/ South West of Nigeria please address the envelope to the Fulbright Program Officer, Public Affairs Section, U.S. Consulate General, 2 Walter Carrington Crescent, Victoria Island, Lagos

For Candidates in the North-Central/North-East/North-West of Nigeria please address the envelope to the Cultural Affairs Assistant, U.S. Embassy, Plot 1075 Diplomatic Drive, Central Area, Abuja
