From 1952 up until now, the benevolent Shell company and its partners, have been awarding scholarships to Nigerian students of various academic backgrounds, to enable them to complete their studies in postgraduate, undergraduate or secondary school level.

Every year, various scholarships are awarded by Shell, and the lucky students are selected for the financial academic aid.

Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) Scholarship

In 2018, approximately $5.9 million (1.7 billion Naira) dollars was invested in scholarships by the Shell Development Company of Nigeria Limited operated Joint Venture (SPDC JV) and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCO).

The SPDC scholarship is put in place by Shell, to give Nigerian students of all academic levels, who are indigenes of Bayelsa, Imo, Rivers, Delta, Abia, Akwa Ibom, Edo, etc, financial aid to either study as undergraduates or postgraduates overseas, or to study at the secondary school level.

Shell believes that education is a long-standing investment that manifests over time and it is the best legacy you can ever give to anyone, group or society. Since 1952 (when Shell first started) up until now, this is still the belief upheld by this company.

Shell Postgraduate Scholarships

There are two scholarship schemes under this scholarship programme:

  1. Shell Petroleum Development Company Joint Venture (SPDC JV) Niger Delta Postgraduate Scholarship
  2. Shell Nigeria Exploration Production Company (SNEPCO) Postgraduate Scholarship For Nigerian Students

Note that the Shell postgraduate scholarships are also international, which means that they can be obtained by the student abroad.

 

Shell Petroleum Development Company Joint Venture Niger Delta Postgraduate Scholarship

The SPDC JV Niger Delta postgraduate scholarship is awarded by Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited as an SPDC joint venture (NNPC/Shell/ ELF/AGIP) to postgraduate students from Bayelsa, Delta, Imo, and Rivers states.

The aim of this scholarship scheme is to provide a study opportunity for eligible Niger Delta (Niger Delta only) postgraduates students in courses related to oil and gas.

In the 8 years that this scholarship scheme has been run, 79 students have been awarded opportunities to study in top-rated universities in the UK on full-time scholarship.

For the postgraduate scholarship for the academic session that commenced last month (September 2019), Shell Petroleum Development Company in partnership with three universities in the UK- Imperial College London, University of  Leeds, and University of Aberdeen, awarded one-year scholarship for MSc studies to selected students.

Eligibility for SPDC JV Postgraduate Scholarship

To be able to apply for the SPDC JV Niger Delta Postgraduate Scholarship scheme, you have to meet the following criteria:

  • Be an indigene of either Rivers, Delta, Imo or Bayelsa States ( a documented proof of this will be required and verified)
  • You currently reside in Nigeria
  • Be aged between 18-29 years or would have turned any of these ages by 30th September
  • Plan to return to Nigeria after completion of the scholarship program
  • Display sound intellectual and leadership potential
  • Meet any of the partner universities’ English Language requirement (this means that you should have at least a score of 6.5 in the IELTS which is valid for the September 2019 admission) Please note that TOEFL is no longer recognized by most UK universities. In addition, failure to meet the universities’ English Language requirement by the time of the selection will make the whole application process invalid.
  • Have obtained a university undergraduate degree certificate with a result that is at least equivalent to a UK Second Class Upper Honours Degree
  • Haven’t studied previously in the UK or any other developed country
  • Have an international passport that is valid up till December 2020
  • Mustn’t currently be or have been an employee of Shell Petroleum Development Company, Royal Dutch Shell Group or any other Shell company or a Nigerian consultant for less than 5 years.
  • Mustn’t be a child, spouse or ward of staff of Shell companies in Nigeria or Nigerian consultant.

 

Awards, Worth And Benefits of SPDC JV Postgraduate Scholarship

SPDC JV postgraduate scholarship will cover only:

  • Tuition fees
  • One economy return flight ticket from Nigeria to the UK
  • Contribution towards living expenses only( note: stipends concerning living expenses are given out based on the Association of Commonwealth Universities published living rate and are limited to this only)
  • This scholarship is non-committal and neither Shell Petroleum Development Company nor any Shell Company is obliged to offer employment of any sort to the candidates after their graduation, nor are the successful candidates bonded to Shell for any period of time after the scholarship has ended.

 

How to Apply for SPDC JV Postgraduate Scholarship

The SPDC JV scholarship application Process is handled by the partner universities. Below are important guide to note while applying for this particular shell scholarship:

  • Application forms will ONLY be available through the websites of the three partner universities Imperial College London, University of Aberdeen, and University of Leeds, (and not anywhere else), following a formal letter of admission by the university.
  • Submit your application form to any of the three universities for any of the qualifying MSc courses (i.e MSc Engineering and MSc Geoscience, Msc Geophysics, MSc Safety & Reliability Engineering for Oil & Gas, MSc Chemical Engineering, and MSc Integrated Petroleum Geoscience, MSc Exploration Geophysics and MSc Electronic/ Electrical Engineering).
  • The completed application form should reach the universities before June 30th
  • The Universities will process the applications and invite the selected candidates for interviews before considering them for the final selection.

How Is The Scholarship Awarded?

Although the scholarship scheme is a scheme initiated by Shell Petroleum Development Company, the final selection of the successful candidates to be awarded the study scholarship is decided by the three participating universities- Imperial College London, the University of Aberdeen, and the University of  Leeds.

After you have applied to the respective website of either of these universities and have met all the requirements set, you will be given a formal letter of admission and acceptance by the awarding university.

 

Shell Nigeria Exploration Production Company (SNEPCO) Postgraduate Scholarship For Nigerian Students

Annually, Shell Nigeria Exploration Production Company announces its National University Scholarship for postgraduate university students.

The objective of this Scheme is to provide a study opportunity for Nigerian students to acquire a Master’s degree in courses relevant to the oil and gas industry with a specific focus on Geotechnical Engineering and Hydrography at prestigious partner universities in the UK, regardless of their state of origin.

SNEPCO in partnership with three universities in the UK- University of Plymouth, University of Birmingham, and Newcastle University awarded successful applicants scholarship lasting one year for the academic session that commenced on September 2019.

Eligibility for SNEPCO Postgraduate Scholarship

To eligible for the National merit university scholarship award, you must:

  • Be a citizen of Nigeria
  • Be currently be residing in Nigeria
  • Be prepared to return to take up permanent residency in Nigeria after the scholarship programme has ended
  • Display intellectual ability and leadership potential
  • Meet the awarding university's English language requirement. This is usually a minimum   score of 65 in IELTS, having an average of 5.5 in every element of the test or C6 grade in English language in SSCE (WAEC/NECO) or equivalent TOEFL. Note that TOEFL is no longer accepted by most UK universities so to be safer, use other tests results mentioned to apply. The test result should be valid for the September 2019 admission
  • Possess a degree certificate with a Grade Point Average equivalent to a Second Class Upper Honours Degree.
  • Mustn’t have studied in a university in the UK or any other developed country
  • Be neither a current or former employee of Shell Petroleum Development Company Limited of Nigeria or the Royal Dutch Shell Group of Companies in Nigeria or the Nigerian Consultant for less than 5 years
  • Be neither a child, ward or spouse of any staff of Shell companies in Nigeria or Nigerian Consultant.
  • Have a passport valid to December 2020

 

Awards, Worths And Benefits of SNEPCO Postgraudate Scholarship

The scholarship covers

  • Full tuition fees,
  • Cost of living expenses in the UK, and
  • One return economy class ticket from Nigeria to the UK.

 

Note: Stipends allotted for cost of living is based on the Association of Commonwealth Universities published living rate and are limited to this only. Also,  this scholarship is valid for one year.

 

How to Apply for SNEPCO Postgraduate Scholarship

The SNEPCO scholarship application Process is also handled by the partner universities.

Here are the points to note while applying:

  • Application forms for the scholarship application will ONLY be available on the websites of the participating universities- University of Birmingham, Newcastle University, and University of Plymouth following an offer of application
  • Submit your application to any of these universities for the following Master’s courses- University of Birmingham; MSc Geotechnical Engineering, University of Plymouth; Msc Hydrography, and Newcastle University; MSc Geotechnical Engineering
  • The universities will process your application, and if you are eligible you will be endorsed to attend an interview before the final selection.

Shell Undergraduate Scholarships

The Shell undergraduate scholarship scheme program is awarded in two schemes:

  • The (SPDC JV) University Scholarship Scheme
  • NNPC/SNEPCO National University Scholarship

 

The (SPDC JV) University Scholarship Scheme

The University Scholarship scheme for undergraduates is run by the operator Shell Petroleum Development Company on behalf of the NNPC/Shell/ ELF/AGIP joint venture to highlight the company’s interest in the promotion of capacity building of the country.

Annually, a whopping number of more than 4,000 Nigerian undergraduates write aptitude tests in order to qualify to join the existing list of students that are being supported by Shell to study in Nigerian universities.

There are two categories of this scholarship scheme available, the National Merit Award which is open to all Nigerian undergraduate students and the Areas of Operation Merit Award which is open to ONLY students who are indigenes of communities where Shell operates, like Abia, Bayelsa, Delta, Imo, and Rivers states.

An average of 16,000 applicants respond to the invitation from Shell to apply for the scholarship that is only obtainable in Nigerian universities.

This year’s application for the scholarship programme opens on October 2nd 2019 and ends on November 12 2019. Hurry and apply now.

 

SPDC JV undergraduate Courses

This scholarship is obtainable only in all Nigerian Universities and is for ALL the courses offered in the Universities.

 

Eligibility for SPDC JV undergraduate Scholarship

In order to apply for the Shell undergraduate scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must be a citizen of Nigeria and is currently enrolled in any of the accredited and approved Nigerian universities
  • You gained admission during the 2019/ 2020 academic session and is currently pursuing your first-degree program
  • Have a minimum of seven O/Levels credits, including in Mathematics and English
  • You are enrolled full-time in a Nigerian university at the undergraduate level, and you possessed a minimum of a 2.5 grade point average at the time of application (attach transcripts and official records to backup your result)

 

Awards, Worths And Benefits of SPDC JV undergraduate Scholarship

This scholarship pays N150,000 which is an annual grant from SPDC JV to the successful winners. The 4000 winners who are awarded the scholarship will be paid N150,000 for the duration of their course in the university.

 

How to Apply for SPDC JV undergraduate Scholarship

The application process is online and is only for eligible candidates. So If you meet the eligibility criteria, then go ahead to apply for the scholarship online at the Shell Offical Website

There you will be required to fill the required personal and educational details, and upload the following documents alongside your application form:

  • Recent passport size photograph (the format should be JPG or JPEG and not more than 200 kilobytes)
  • University or Jamb (UTME or D/E) admission letter
  • Unified Tertiary Matriculation (UTME) scores
  • ‘O’ Level result(s) and ‘A’ Level/ OND, NCE results where applicable
  • Letter of Identification from the state of origin (showing local government origin)
  • 3 Scanned copies of letters of identification, duly signed and stamped by;

The Paramount Ruler of the Community

Interview Date And Venue

Eligible applicants are selected on the basis of their National SSCE and Jamb Examination result. No other selection examination will be taken.

Following selection, an aptitude test will be held at centres in Enugu, Warri, Abuja, and Port Harcourt.

The Test is usually held on the 22nd of November by 10:00 am and accreditation time is 7:30 am to 9:45 am before the test commences.

If selected, an email containing your Ref number, test venue, accreditation time, test time, and a list of things to bring along to the exam centre will be sent to you.

A list of the documents and materials you may be asked to come with include:

  • Valid student university ID card or National ID card or Driver’s License (if you have)
  • Photocopy of WASC/GCE/ ‘O’ Level/ SSCE statement of result
  • Photocopy of ‘A’ Level/NCE/IJMB/Remedial Results (if applicable)
  • Photocopy of Jamb results (if applicable)
  • Photocopy of Jamb or University admission letter
  • Writing materials (HB pencil and eraser)
  • Passport size photograph (full name and surname should be written at the back and underlined)
  • A print out of the email

How Is The Scholarship Awarded?

NNPC/SNEPCO National University Scholarship (Undergraduate)

The Shell Nigeria Exploration Production Scholarship (SNEPCO) on behalf of itself, its co-venturers and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) offer the National University Award to successful applicants who will receive grants from their second year to completion of their degree programme.  

This scholarship scheme aims to promote academic excellence and skills of young Nigerians and only applications from qualified Nigerian students will be accepted.

Shell Petroleum Development Company Secondary School Scholarship Scheme for Nigerian Students

The Shell Nigeria Secondary School Scholarship Scheme is for host communities in Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Imo, and Rivers states.

The aim of the scholarship scheme is to help students pay through school as well as enhance academic advancement in the host communities

Every year, Shell awards an average of 2,600 post-primary school scholarships in these seven states.

Shell lifted the burden of having to pay school fees for the parents and guardians of selected students, and due to this, thousands of parents and students, especially in the Niger Delta region, look forward to being part of this golden opportunity.

 

Courses Offered

The scholarship is awarded in all the secondary schools in these mentioned states and is available in all fields

 

Eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship, the student must be:

  • From a host community in either- Abia, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Edo, Imo, and Rivers state
  • They must be students of an accredited Nigerian secondary school

Cradle To Career Scholarship

The Cradle to Career Scholarship Scheme is an all-inclusive Nigerian Secondary School Scholarship venture that provides opportunities for brilliant pupils from less privileged backgrounds to obtain quality education at reputable secondary schools in Nigeria.

This scheme is designed to bridge educational equalities resulting from geographic and socio-economic differences and enhance the level of literacy in the Niger Delta and Nigeria at large. This scholarship scheme already has 60 beneficiaries placed in very good private schools.

There are two categories of the Cradle to Career Scholarship:

  • The SPDC JV Cradle to Career Scholarship Scheme
  • The NNPC/SNEPCO Cradle to Career Scholarship Scheme

 

 

The SPDC JV Cradle to Career Scholarship Scheme

It is managed by Shell Petroleum Development Company Limited (SPDC) on behalf of the joint venture (NNPC/Shell/ ELF/AGIP). This scheme was started in 2010 for candidates in the key Niger Delta States of Rivers, Bayelsa, and Delta. Three hundred and Fifty (350) students are already enrolled into any prestigious Nigerian Secondary Schools.

 

The National Cradle To Career Scholarship Scheme

Is managed by Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCO) Limited on behalf of itself, its co-venturers- Exxonmobil, Total, NAOC, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

The NNPC/ SNEPCO Cradle to Career Scholarship Scheme  is awarded to eligible Nigerian students who are invited to apply based on their performance in the National Common Entrance Examination conducted by the National Examination Council (NECO).

Candidates will be selected from each of the 36 states including the Federal Capital Territory and out of the applicants, the best three students who meet all the requirements will be chosen for the award to be enrolled in any of the recognized Nigerian secondary school.

 

Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for this award are:

  • The pupil must be Nigerian and would have written the National Common Entrance Exam organized by NECO
  • Must be pupils of class 6 in any primary school
  • Pupils must be indigenes of the state they were selected from
  • The pupil must be residing within the same geo-political zone as their state of origin
  • The pupil must be present to write the test at the designated school in different locations
  • The parents or guardian of the pupil must sign a consent form confirming the authenticity of the document provided during the accreditation exercise

  • SNEPCO doesn’t assign agents or representatives to assist candidates with their application, don’t give any such personnel your application form to fill out for you
  • Screening is done constantly and if you submit any false applications you will be immediately disqualified
  • Only shortlisted candidates for the scholarship will be awarded.

Interview Date And Venue

The examination will be held on 27th July. On the examination day, the candidates are to be accompanied to the examination centre by their guardians and parents.

They are required to come with the following documents:

  • Two recent passport size photograph
  • Letter of introduction from the primary school previously attended
  • Letter of identification from the Local Government Area of Origin

The exam will be held at the following centres:

South-East

  • Ibeku High School - Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene Road, Umuahia, Abia State (Distribution by the State of Origin: Abia, Imo and Ebonyi)
  • Gruntvig International Secondary School - Oba, Onitsha, Anambra State (Distribution by the State of Origin: Anambra and Enugu).

South-South

  • Topfaith International Secondary School - Mpatak, Esien-Udim, Akwa-Ibom State (Distribution by the State of Origin: Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Rivers)
  • Delta Career Nur/Pry School - Plot 160, Airport Road. Effurun, Warri, Delta State (Distribution by the State of Origin: Edo, Delta and Bayelsa)

South-West

Shell Scholarship List

Following the exam administered to eligible candidates who were invited to take the exam, the final list of selected students to be awarded for each of the respective Shell Scholarship scheme will be printed in National newspapers and the Shell official website.

Also, the selected candidate will directly be communicated via email or any other presented mode of communication.

The number of people awarded so far for each scholarship scheme is:

  • 79 students for the SPDC JV Niger Delta Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme
  • 4,000 candidates for  the postgraduate University Scholarship Scheme
  • 2,600 post-primary scholarships for the SPDC Secondary School Scheme for Nigerian students
  • 60 beneficiaries for the Cradle to Career Scholarship Scheme
  • 350 candidates awarded the SPDC JV Cradle to Career Scholarship Scheme
  • 3 best candidates awarded the National Cradle to Career Scholarship Scheme

 

Shell Scholars Forum

The Shell Scholarships commenced in the 1950s and since then, Shell Scholars who have been beneficiaries of Shell Scholarship have completed their programmes either outside or within, have joined the forum. Those who studied outside, have returned home to occupy key positions in public service, commerce, and industry.

The Shell Scholars forum was inaugurated in 2013, to create a medium for older beneficiaries of the Shell Scholarship to mentor the new beneficiaries.

 

Why Join The Forum?

The Shell Scholar forum is a great way to network with previous Shell Scholars who were also beneficiaries of the postgraduate and undergraduate scholarships awarded by Shell.

It provides you with the opportunity to contribute to future improvements in the SPDC’s education strategy and also provide ideas that may influence existing government education policies. You will also be at the forefront of mentoring new scholars and fixing the educational challenges of today.
