University of Michigan African Presidential Scholars Program 2020-2021

The University of Michigan is accepting applications from eligible faculty members for the University of Michigan African Presidential Scholars Program.

Starting in 2020, the program will host two cohorts per year (August through December, and January through May). Applicants will have the opportunity to indicate their preference for a particular cohort during the application process.

The selected Michigan scholars will receive five months residency permit at the University of Michigan paired with a faculty collaborator, with full access to the university’s resources and opportunity to present research to the U-M community and other benefits bestowed by the university.

Previous recipients of the scholarship are not eligible to apply. All the applicants must be an early career faculty member who has taught in the higher education system for less than ten years, presently teaching in a college or university in Africa.

Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.

Benefits of University of Michigan Research

Those admitted to the UMAPS Program will receive:

  1. Five months of residency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, paired with a faculty collaborator with full access to the university’s resources
  2. Round-trip airfare from their home country to Ann Arbor, Michigan
  3. Free housing, medical insurance, a research allowance, and a modest stipend to cover living (Important note: The UMAPS program is unable to accommodate spouses and/or dependents)
  4. Office/Laboratory space 
  5. Opportunity to present research to the U-M community

Requirements for University of Michigan Research

Previous recipients of the UMAPS fellowship are not eligible to apply. Preference will be given to applicants without extensive international experience outside the continent.

All applicants must:

  1. Be an early career faculty member who has taught in the higher education system for less than ten years, presently teaching in a college or university in Africa
  2. Be able to demonstrate support from home institution with letter of recommendation from head of department, dean, or vice chancellor
  3. Be able to remain in residence for five months

Selection Process

Review and selection will be made by a multidisciplinary faculty committee at the University of Michigan and will be based on the following:

  1. Academic quality of the candidate and of the proposed program of scholarship
  2. Academic fit of the candidate with others selected in the cycle and with the areas of interest described in the Scholarly Program section below – it is our hope to facilitate scholarly networks
  3. Equitable representations of scholars aligned with ASC’s three disciplinary initiatives
  4. Support of the candidate’s home institution

Priority will be given to candidates from disadvantaged backgrounds. Promotion of gender equity in the current class of scholars and in the African academy will also be prioritized. Preference will be given to candidates who do not have significant international experience outside the continent.

All candidates must:

  1. Complete the online application form
  2. Submit a curriculum vitae
  3. Submit a scholarly program/research proposal (not to exceed five pages) (See link in scholarship Webpage)
  4. Applications from a wide range of disciplines and schools are welcome; applications that align with the center’s initiatives—African Heritage, African Social Research, and STEM-Africa—are encouraged
  5. Provide a complete name and contact information of the department head, dean, or vice chancellor at the applicant’s home institution who will be writing their letter of support (See link in scholarship Webpage)

Applicants outside of Ethiopia, Ghana, Liberia, South Africa, or Uganda must be nominated by a University of Michigan faculty member with whom the interested applicant already has a pre-existing/established relationship
