The Global Pluralism Award 2020

The Global Pluralism Award celebrates achievement and excellence in the field of pluralism.

The Award is presented once every two years to individuals, organizations, governments and businesses of any nationality. Through their remarkable and sustained achievements, awardees contribute to building more inclusive societies in which human diversity is protected.

Presented by the Global Centre for Pluralism, an international research and education centre located in Ottawa, Canada, the Award aims to

1. Raise the international profile of pluralism, defined as a principle of respect for diversity,
2. Identify and disseminate innovative and successful approaches to pluralism globally, and
3. Recognize and raise the profile of exemplary organizations, individuals or other entities seeking to advance pluralism.

Benefits of Global Centre for Pluralism Award

Winners will share a total prize pool of CAD $150,000. The monetary prize will be equally divided among the three Award winners (CAD $50,000 each).1 In late 2021, each of the three Award winners and up to seven honourable mention recipients, or their delegates, will be invited to the Award ceremony. In addition to the financial Award, the Centre will work with Award winners to develop a program of in-kind support and engagement in 2022. This may include communications support, opportunities to engage in the research and educational activities of the Centre, residency/internships at the Centre, inclusion in the Centre’s pluralism education and training initiatives, etc. Above: The Award sculpture designed by the late Karl Schlamminger 

Requirements for Global Centre for Pluralism Award

A wide range of disciplines

Nominees must demonstrate remarkable and sustained achievement in any of the wide range of disciplines related to pluralism. These disciplines include:

1. Legal reform
2. Human rights
3. Democracy promotion,
4. Social cohesion
5. Education
6. Ethnic relations
7. Conflict resolution
8. Peacebuilding
9. Migration and integration

Please note that the above is not an exhaustive list.

International Nominees

Eligible nominees from all countries are eligible, including:

1. Individuals (e.g. artists, journalists, academics, policy-makers, filmmakers, etc.);
2. Civil society organizations (e.g. professional associations, faith-based organizations, labour unions, non-profit research or educational institutions, local community groups, non-governmental organizations, foundations, think tanks, etc.);
3. Social enterprises;
4. Corporations;
5. Educational, research and policy institutions (public or private);
6. Local/municipal, regional or federal/national branches of governments, etc.

Requirements

1. Nominees must be living. The Award cannot be given posthumously.
2. Nominees must not be an agency or employee of any of the Centre’s founding partners, namely the Government of Canada and the Aga Khan Development Network.
3. Nominees must not be members of the jury, the Centre’s Board or staff or a consultant receiving remuneration from the Centre at the time of nomination. Close relations and organizations owned or operated by the jury, Screening Committee, the Centre’s Board members and staff are also non-eligible.
4. Individuals and organizations nominated for the Award must not have been found guilty of committing violent crimes, terrorism, or other criminal activities; or have publicly held extremist views

Candidates must meet the following

requirements:

1. Candidates must be living. The Award cannot be given posthumously.
2. Candidates for the 2021 Award must not have submitted an application consecutively in both of the last two Award cycles (2017 and 2019 Award).
3. Candidates must not have previously received the Global Pluralism Award or an honourable mention.
4. Candidates must not be an agency, employee or institutional project of any of the Centre’s founding partners, namely the Government of Canada and
5. the Aga Khan Development Network. Partner or grantee organizations of the aforementioned, however, are eligible to apply.
6. Candidates must not be members of the Jury, the Centre’s Board or staff, a Centre’s Director emeritus, former juror or a consultant receiving remuneration
7. from the Centre at the time of nomination. Close relations and organizations owned or operated by members of the Jury, the Centre’s Board members, Centre’s Director Emeriti, former jurors and staff are also ineligible.
8. Candidates for the Award must not have been found guilty of committing violent crimes, terrorism, or other criminal activities; or have publicly held extremist views.
